WASHINGTON — Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) on Monday said she would introduce legislation to repeal a 2016 law that hampered the Drug Enforcement Administration’s ability to regulate opioid distributors it suspects of misconduct.
The new bill would rescind a little-noticed law championed last year by Rep. Tom Marino (R-Pa.), who President Trump has since nominated to serve as “drug czar” and director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy.
“Media reports indicate that this law has significantly affected the government’s ability to crack down on opioid distributors that are failing to meet their obligations and endangering our communities,” McCaskill said in a statement. “I’ll be introducing legislation that repeals this law and continue my work investigating the role pharmaceutical distributors played in fueling this public health crisis.”
