The government has temporarily extended the open enrollment season for the vision and dental benefits program for federal employees, after a website crashed on Monday, officially the last day for signing up or changing coverage.

In the Federal Dental and Vision Insurance Program, federal employees and retirees may choose dental coverage, vision coverage or both for themselves and certain eligible family members. The enrollee pays the full cost.

“The dental and vision enrollment website, BENEFEDS.com, is currently undergoing repairs due to technical issues, however, the call center (1-877-888-3337) is open until midnight on Wednesday, December 14, 2016, Eastern Time to process FEDVIP changes. Those wishing to enroll or make changes can do so by calling the call center,” the Office of Personnel Management said in a notice to agencies Monday evening.

FEDVIP has 10 dental and four vision plans, some of them national and others available only regionally. As of fiscal year 2015, there were nearly 1.7 million dental plan enrollments and more than 1.1 million vision plan enrollments.

Open enrollment season is now over, however, in the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program for federal employees and eligible retirees and in the flexible spending account program in which employees, though not retirees, can designate pretax withholdings to pay for dependent care expenses and/or health expenses not covered by health insurance. Enrollments in those programs are made through different online portals.
