Republican calls for effort to repeal Obamacare
Rep. Vicky Hartzler (R-Mo.) on Saturday touted legislation in the House that would repeal key aspects of Obamacare and defund Planned Parenthood.
“As Congress returns next week, in one of our first acts of the New Year, the House will vote on a bill that would eliminate key parts of Obamacare and stop taxpayer funding for abortion providers, such as Planned Parenthood,” she said in the GOP’s weekly address.
{mosads}“This would be a significant step in improving our healthcare system.”
The Missouri lawmaker argued the healthcare legislation has caused premiums and deductibles to skyrocket.
“That’s the problem with Obamacare: It forces people to buy insurance that’s much more expensive than what they need,” she said. “And when you force millions of people to buy expensive and unaffordable insurance, it’s not that surprising to see premiums going up.”
She said the bill will eliminate the individual and employer mandates.
“No longer will job creators have to choose between hiring more workers or paying for coverage they can’t afford,” she said.
Hartzler also said the bill will defund Planned Parenthood in the wake of undercover videos purporting to show the clinic trafficking in fetal body parts from abortions.
“The people have for years asked Congress to stop sending taxpayer dollars to Planned Parenthood, especially as we learned last year of the disturbing practices Planned Parenthood officials engaged in, such as harvesting and selling baby body parts,” she said.
“These actions along with the hundreds of thousands of abortions they perform each year show a blatant disregard for human life,” she added.
Planned Parenthood has denied the accusation that they traffick in fetal body parts for profit.
“To be clear: Planned Parenthood has never sold fetal tissue for profit,” Planned Parenthood Action Fund Vice president Eric Ferrero said in a statement.
By way of the reconciliation process, Hartzler said, the bill will go straight to President Obama’s desk, circumventing attempts in the Senate to block it.
“As a result, President Obama will soon have a choice: Does he support the people and women’s health, or does he support Washington mandates and tax dollars going to Planned Parenthood?” she said.
Congress will reconvene Monday. Votes are expected the next day.
