When can I enroll in private health plan coverage through the Marketplace?

In general, you can only enroll in non-group health plan coverage during the Open Enrollment period. For 2024 coverage, the Open Enrollment period in HealthCare.gov states begins November 1, 2023 and closes at the end of the day on January 16, 2024 (Pacific Time). If you plan to sign up, be sure to complete your application and select your plan before Open Enrollment ends. If you want coverage to take effect on January 1, 2024, be sure to sign up no later than December 15, 2023. If you sign up after December 15, your 2024 coverage will take effect on February 1. Once the Open Enrollment period is over, most individuals and families will not be able to enroll in Marketplace health plans until the next Open Enrollment period. However, if you experience certain changes in circumstances during the year, you will have a special 60-day opportunity to enroll in Marketplace Health plans, outside of the Open Enrollment Period. American Indians and Alaska Natives can enroll in Marketplace coverage throughout the year, not just during Open Enrollment.

In addition, in 2024, people who are eligible for premium tax credits and with income up to 150% of the federal poverty level ($21,870 for a single adult or $37,290 for a family of 3) will be able to sign up throughout the year in HealthCare.gov states.

State-run Marketplaces can set their own dates, and several will have a longer Open Enrollment period for 2024 coverage, while in several others it will be shorter. Due to the federal holiday on January 15, state marketplaces are allowed to extend the deadline for Open Enrollment to January 16. Check with your state Marketplace for more information.
