KFF Examines Recent Trump Administration Policies that Affect Health Coverage and Care for Lawfully Present Immigrant Families
A new KFF issue brief provides an overview of actions by the Trump administration and Congress that are likely to affect lawfully present immigrants’ access to health coverage and care, including new restrictions on eligibility for coverage and services as well as changes in immigration enforcement and other policies.
The administrative actions will likely reduce access to care among both lawfully present and undocumented immigrants and their children. In contrast, the congressional actions will directly affect coverage only for lawfully present immigrants and their children. Over the long-term, the changes in law and policy may also lead to worse health outcomes and have negative impacts on the U.S. economy.
Immigrants form a growing share of the U.S. population and workforce. As of 2024, there were over 50 million immigrants residing in the country. President Trump’s agenda has focused on restricting immigration and enhancing immigration enforcement. Immigrants and their health care have been the focus of several ongoing policy debates this year, including the dispute over the recent government shutdown.
