What’s Next for PEPFAR in 2025 and Beyond?

As the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), the U.S. global HIV/AIDS program, for the first time faces significant challenges that could hamper its ability to fulfill its mission, KFF explores recent developments and the program’s outlook under the Trump administration. Among the issues covered, KFF looks at the impact of President Trump’s foreign aid funding freeze, the dismantling of the U.S. Agency for International Development, and uncertainty about PEPFAR’s reauthorization.

PEPFAR’s current situation, coupled with uncertainty about future changes, poses potential risks to health outcomes for a program that has been shown to have saved millions of lives and helped to build health infrastructure in sub-Saharan Africa.
